Fleur de Lys Tuition was set up by Laura Garland in 2008 when she was approached by a few friends to tutor their children for their Grammar school transfer test (previously known in Northern Ireland as the 11+ exam at age eleven, determining a child's progression into a Grammar school or a Comprehensive College.) Following this experience and a year spent in Paris teaching English in two primary schools and a total of 250 pupils, plus a number of private pupils, she was able on return to Belfast to teach both English as a foreign language and French.
Fleur de Lys Tuition aims to achieve a five point plan with every student:
1. To increase each student's confidence in their own ability to learn a foreign language, written and spoken to their chosen level.
2. To encourage the student to not be afraid to attempt to communicate in a foreign language.
3.To provide practical lessons for each student depending on their needs, should it be opening a bank account or ordering a meal or simply buying train tickets. No eventuality is considered to be unlikely!
4. To ensure that the student is in charge of their learning programme. If they are not happy, then the tutor is not happy. The student is in control of what they are learning. It's their time, effort and money that goes into this endeavour, and we strive to make it as rewarding as possible. All lesson plans will be discussed with the student on a regular basis and lessons tailored as appropriate, even at short notice. Fleur de Lys tuition offers a learning experience, not an intimidating classroom re-enactment!
5. To make lessons simple to understand and importantly, enjoyable!
Since its inception, Fleur de Lys Tuition has expanded in its area of available tuition, having taken on a variety of new tutors that can be seen here. Previous tutors have undergone training to expand their own area of expertise in order to offer the best possible tuition available in the Greater Belfast Area.
